Procurement Note: Marine Corps Completes Live-Fire Test of Replicator Initiative Munition

By Garrett MollApril 24, 2026

The Marine Corps completed on Tuesday a live-fire test of a loitering munition developed under the Department of Defense's Replicator initiative, the program designed to field what the Deputy Secretary of Defense has described as "attritable autonomous systems" at scale and on a compressed timeline.

The test, conducted at a range in California, involved the munition engaging a simulated target at a distance the Marine Corps declined to specify. The munition successfully engaged the target. The program office declined to make the munition, or any imagery of the munition, available to press.

The Replicator initiative has an announced target of fielding "multiple thousands" of attritable autonomous systems across the joint force by August 2026. Per the Deputy Secretary, the program is "on track," though the program's specific milestones have not been made public.

The per-unit cost of the munition tested Tuesday has not been disclosed. Comparable loitering munitions in the Ukrainian theater cost approximately $50,000 to $150,000 per unit, depending on variant and source.

Rhonda, my dog, watched the evening news coverage of the test with what I interpreted as indifference.
